Phuket is deserved for the name of Jewel Island in Asia. This island is part of Thailand and has size as large as Singapore. This island connected to the mainland Thailand by bridge. The name phuket is apparently derived from the word in Jawi or in Malay bukit for hill, as what this island looks like from a distance. The region was formerly referred to as “Thalang,” derived from the old Malay “Telong” which means “Cape.” The northern district of the province, which was the location of the old capital, still uses this name.
